Leeds United did not anticipate losing Georginio Rutter in the summer of 2024. The French forward appeared committed to staying at Elland Road, a stance he has since reinforced.
After their play-off final defeat in 2024, Leeds accepted that player sales would be necessary to offset the financial shortfall caused by missing out on promotion to the Premier League. Crysencio Summerville was sold to West Ham, while Archie Gray completed a move to Tottenham Hotspur during a chaotic summer for the club.
Rutter, however, was expected to remain and play a key role in another promotion push. That plan changed late in the window when Brighton activated the release clause in his contract on deadline day.
The Frenchman’s departure came as a surprise to Leeds, and Rutter has spoken publicly about the events that led to his move to Brighton in the final hours of the 2024 transfer window.
Georginio Rutter aims a dig at two former Leeds managers
Rutter’s first few months at Leeds were horrendous as it was clear that he was not ready to make an impact in a Premier League team heading towards relegation.
The constant managerial churn at Leeds in those months didn’t help the young Frenchman, who was signed by Jesse Marsch, but had to play under Javi Gracia and Sam Allardyce.
He has broken his silence abou those months and indicated that he was expecting to play as Leeds had paid a lot of money to sign him. However, Marsch’s sacking changed everything.
The Frenchman conceded that he was not happy at not playing much under Gracia and Allardyce and felt unwanted at Leeds in those first few months.
Rutter said in an interview with the Premier League: “It was difficult because, you know, I’m the type of player who tries everything, wants to give everything.
“They pay me a lot of money, I say now I have to give everything to this club. And when I came there, there was pressure straight away, because Jesse Marsch wanted me, signed me. You imagine it’s like, Jesse Marsch comes to you and says Saturday, Patrick Bamford’s going to play, and Monday you’re going to play against Manchester United. That’s okay, I go home, Jesse Marsch sacked.
“Another manager came. Don’t play. I don’t play (under) Javi Gracia, I don’t play. They put me with the under-21’s, and at that time, you have two choices: you have the choice to give up and say it’s done, or you say in your head, walk for you, and that was the most difficult for me.
“I couldn’t do anything after another manager (Allardyce) came, and yeah, I don’t play. When I play it was 6-0 for the other team or 4-0, and I played ten minutes, and I said, first of all, I’m not happy.
“I’m not happy, and they don’t want me because I don’t play, so that is the first six months at Leeds.”
Rutter became a fan favourite at Elland Road
Leeds United struck a deal worth up to ÂŁ35.5m to sign Georginio Rutter in January 2023, a transfer that raised eyebrows given his age and lack of top-level experience at the time.
The club required proven quality to help stave off relegation, but instead took a gamble on Rutter, who found it difficult to make an immediate impact during his early months at Elland Road.
Leeds were ultimately relegated at the end of that campaign, and many supporters were quick to label the forward an expensive mistake.
| Competition | Games | Goals | Assists |
|---|---|---|---|
| Championship | 45 | 6 | 15 |
| Championship Play-Offs | 3 | 1 | 0 |
| FA Cup | 2 | 1 | 1 |
| EFL Cup | 1 | 0 | 0 |
| Total (All Competitions) | 51 | 8 | 16 |
That perception changed under Daniel Farke in the Championship. Rutter flourished during the 2023/24 season, scoring six goals and providing 15 assists, quickly becoming a fan favourite.
He forged a strong bond with the Elland Road faithful, making his unexpected departure in 2024 a deeply emotional moment for both the player and the supporters.
