‘Get them in the first team’- Leeds fans demand duo are given chance after U23s win

Although the senior side had an opening day to forget, the Leeds United Under 23s have cause for celebration as they beat Crystal Palace 3-1 in their first game of the season.

A goal from Dutch winger Crysencio Summerville opened the scoring, before debutant Sean McGurk found the net and Liam McCarron finished the scoring. New signing Kristoffer Klaesson denied Palace from the spot in what was a strong debut for the Norwegian.

There are many talented players in the Under 23s for Leeds, but 2 players in particular stood out amongst spectators. The first was Crysencio Summerville who Leeds fans will undoubtedly have become familiar with by now. Summerville was fantastic last season as the Whites romped their way to the title. Summerville already has first team experience over in the Eredivisie with ADO Den Haag, yet is still only 19 years old.

However, some less than impressive performances from Helder Costa and the seemingly stalled progression of Ian Poveda have led to some fans pleading with Marcelo Bielsa to use Summerville in the first team. He was an unused substitute against Manchester United which may indicate that Bielsa does plan to use him at some point.

The other standout performer was right back Cody Drameh, who signed from Fulham last summer. Drameh is also 19 years old but unlike Summerville, his pathway to the first team isn’t as easy to see. Luke Ayling will be the first choice right back for quite some time, and Bielsa seems comfortable with using Jamie Shackleton or Stuart Dallas there when Ayling has been forced into centre back. Either way, it’s clear that Drameh is a talented player, and seems to be the long term replacement to Luke Ayling.

One fan commented on Twitter  “Get Drameh and Summerville in the first team at some point this season both have great potential.” They do have a point. Although the Under 23s obviously play at an inferior level, they do look like very promising players who should be able to make the step up at some point this year.
