Chievo president Sergio Pellissier has claimed that Napoli goalkeeper Elia Caprile enjoyed his experience at Leeds United despite not playing a game for the senior side.
Caprile made his debut for Napoli at the weekend when he came on from the bench to replace the injured Alex Meret in their 0-0 draw against Juventus.
With Meret out injured, the goalkeeper now has a chance to impress Antonio Conte and establish himself as the starting eleven goalkeeper at Napoli.
Caprile had a brief spell in England with Leeds United where he spent two years but was limited to playing for their Under-21 side and never made his debut for the senior squad.
With the Italian now playing for a club such as Napoli, many feel Leeds missed out on a good goalkeeper but Illan Meslier has been irreplaceable at Elland Road since the end of the 2019/20 season.
Caprile enjoyed his experience at Leeds United despite a lack of game-time
The Italian left Chievo to join Leeds in 2020 and Pellissier looked back at what the goalkeeper encountered after he left the club for England.
The Chievo president stressed that the young goalkeeper really enjoyed his stay at Leeds and had an ‘excellent experience’ of being with the Whites.
However, he did admit that Caprile’s career only got back on track once he returned to Italy following his spell at Leeds and he has developed into an excellent goalkeeper.
“At Leeds, he had an excellent experience even if he played little, then he came back and followed the right path”, Pellissier was quoted as saying by TuttoNapoli.
“Today Caprile is an excellent goalkeeper.”
Meslier never looked like losing his place in the starting eleven, except towards the end of the 2022/23 campaign, once he broke into the first-team in the final part of the 2019/20 season under Marcelo Bielsa.
Caprile was never going to get the opportunities at Leeds given Meslier’s excellence and the Italian is now looking to establish himself at Napoli.
