He does a hell of a lot – Pundit backs 20-year-old Leeds United star

IMAGO / Action Plus

Former Leeds United star Tony Dorigo has insisted that Mateo Joseph does a lot for the team as a number 9 and will start scoring goals with maturity.

Daniel Farke has gambled on Joseph being the number 9 for Leeds this season after the club failed to bring in a new striker in the summer transfer window.

Patrick Bamford doesn’t remain fit for long enough these days for Leeds to bank on him and Farke has not taken to Joel Piroe in the number 9 role despite his goalscoring record in the Championship.

Joseph has scored just once the season in the Championship and has two senior goals for Leeds in his senior career thus far but the Spaniard has been trusted to carry the weight of being the man up front.

With Piroe making an impact from the bench last weekend, there are calls for the Dutchman to start in the number 9 role but Dorigo indicated that Leeds must persist with Joseph.

The former Leeds United star is keen to highlight the Spaniard’s overall contribution to the team

Dorigo admitted that Joseph is very much a work-in-progress as a goalscorer and is still very raw and young for the number 9 role.

However, he is certain that the Spaniard will start scoring goals once he calms down a bit and the former White is keen to underline his importance to the team.

The former Leeds star insisted that Joseph is doing a lot more than just finding the back of the net for Leeds and pointed out that his performance up front is also helping to set up other players to score goals.

“He is a young boy, he is raw but once that kind of calms down a bit, we will going to see him score plenty of goals”, Dorigo said on the Square Ball Podcast.

“When is that actually going to happen?

“But you have got to look at what else he is doing for the side and he does a hell of a lot.

“He sets up a lot of people to score as well.”
