Burnley and Leeds United go head-to-head today in their first clash after the October international break. Both clubs went toe to toe in the Championship last season as the sides managed to get promoted.
The Clarets and the Whites had garnered 100 points in 46 games. The only differentiator remained the goal difference, which Farke had made sure to be high due to his dominant style of football.
Leeds had 26 more goals than Burnley, pushing them to win the league title. Burnley were also directly promoted, but the Clarets didn’t have the honour of doing so by lifting the league title.
However, the Lancashire-based outfit weren’t anywhere near unworthy, conceding only 16 goals throughout the season. The club’s defensive prowess ensured that they reached the English Premier League with a hundred points to their name.

Speaking before the Whites’ clash against the Clarets, Daniel Farke talked about the rivalry last season in the EFL Championship.
“They were at least not good for my heart and my nerves, for sure, because we needed a 95th-minute winner in the 46th game to win the league.”
“It was a long, tough season, and after the final whistle, I was not able to celebrate. I had to sit down for a few moments because I was completely done.”
“To make us a better team, yes, because we couldn’t allow ourselves to take one per cent off the gas. Sheffield United also played an incredible season, and Burnley were fantastic.”
“To win the league, we couldn’t have had one less point to win it, so we definitely did it the hard way. Burnley played a part and also to instil this culture and mentality of consistency and to keep going until the last second was helpful”
“But if you ask me, I would have preferred it the other way round – to half be on holiday at the beginning of April, but sadly it was not possible.”
Looking ahead this season
The rivalry of the last season will continue as both clubs have the big stage to host their games. Both clubs will be hoping to stay up, but Burnley already look drowsy, seven games in.
Leeds United stand 15th, significantly off the relegation zone. With eight points to their name, the Whites will be looking forward to closing the small gaps.
Burnley seem to be the right place to start tightening the screws. Leeds midfielder Sean Longstaff is also positive regarding the clash as the Whites pack their bags for Lancashire.
