On Sunday all the talk was of course about a quite brilliant game between Wakefield and St Helens which was settled in Golden Point, but before that some of Leeds Rhinos’ next stars featured in the final Yorkshire vs Lancashire Academy Origin Test as Lancashire chased a 3-0 series win over Yorkshire.
Leeds were represented by five players in the Yorkshire side. Alfie Edgell started at fullback, Riley Lumb was on the wing, Jake Higgins was at prop with Bailey Aldridge at hooker and Ben Littlewood on the bench.
Meanwhile, one Rhino featured for Lancashire in Jack Sinfield who, like his father Kevin, hails from Oldham.
Sinfield had an impressive day with the boot kicking five goals many of which came in the second half as Lancashire scored five tries to Yorkshire’s one as they pulled away with Sinfield at the hub of everything starting in the halves for the red roses.
Some, including his last conversion, were completed with a high degree of difficulty demonstrating how he has followed in his father’s footsteps in terms of goalkicking.
Fellow Rhino Bailey Aldridge was also on the scoresheet scoring Yorkshire’s only try of the second 40 15 minutes into the second half.
That gave Yorkshire hope as they trimmed the deficit after a good start to the second half from Lancashire. However, three more tries from the Red Roses concluded a 34-14 defeat for Yorkshire and a 3-0 series defeat.
Nonetheless, it was good experience for the six Rhinos involved many of whom I’m sure we will see in Blue and Amber shirts in the near future.
