How much did each promoted side spend this season – as Leeds United transfer budget revealed

Leeds United have a big task on their hands next season. It has gotten increasingly difficult for newly promoted clubs to close the gap with the Premier League. Over the past few seasons, all the promoted teams have gone back down in the same season.

Leicester City, Ipswich Town and Southampton were the casualties this season. There are just a few clubs who got promoted a few years back that have maintained their Premier League status. And they do it mostly by being smart about assembling their squads. Teams get a huge financial boost when they go up only to squander it on a whole new squad. Some clubs have had success restructuring their squad over different seasons instead of trying to do it in one window.

Leeds United transfer budget revealed

Leeds will now face that challenge this summer. Daniel Farke and the recruitment team will have to figure out which players need to be added to the squad. The German has already been having meetings to plan for the summer window. It has now been revealed that the Whites will have up to £150million to spend this summer. A fee that looks decent enough to improve the squad. But let’s take a look at how much club’s spent last season when they were promoted.

Leicester City – £85million (including add-ons)

The lowest spenders among the promoted clubs. The foxes spent a huge part of their budget buying young talent with potential. Fatawu Issahaku, Oliver Skipp and Bilal El Khannouss joined the club. But they lacked a bit of experience, and it showed throughout the season.

Southampton – £118.2m (including add-ons)

The Saints’ most expensive transfer was signing Aaron Ramsdale from Arsenal. However, the England keeper’s season has failed to justify his price tag. Southampton continued their run of signing high potential players from other Premier League sides. They fared the same as they did in their last campaign in the top flight.

Ipswich Town – £155.75million (including add-ons)

The biggest spenders among the trio, Ipswich spent a lot of money signing a mix of Premier League and Championship talents. Omari Hutchinson, Liam Delap and Jacob Greaves were just a few of the arrivals at Portman Road. They ended up spending more than some teams in the Premier League this season, but their recruitment did not really pay off.
