How much money do Leeds United get for Premier League promotion – The answer will surprise you

Leeds United have been officially promoted to the Premier League with two league games left. After the events of last summer, fans will be delighted with the ending of this campaign.

When Leeds lost the Championship play off final last year, it turned out to be the first of multiple dominoes to fall at Elland Road. The club ended up losing key players, and it was hard to keep the squad together especially when the Premier League came calling. Some players also left the club because they did not want to spend another season in the Championship.

Crysencio Summerville, Archie Gray and Georginio Rutter were just three of the names that left the club in the summer.

With Leeds back in the Premier League, they have serious decisions to make when it comes to the squad. Daniel Farke and the recruitment team will need to be spot on in their signings. Luckily, promoted clubs get a financial boost from promotion.

But how much do teams actually get from the Premier League? Dr. Dan Plumley explains the breakdown of funds that the club are expected to receive soon:

“Usually we work off a general £120million for promotion, but that’s if you’ve not been in the league [in the previous three years] and have not been receiving parachute payments,” he said to Leeds Live.

“So if we come down a little bit from that, then it’s going to be a big boost, £70m or £80m [for Leeds upon promotion].

Is £70-80M enough to survive the Premier League?

£70m or £80m is just the fee they receive initially. TV money and tickets revenue as well as the club’s officials will determine how much in total they can spend this summer.

Just this season, Southampton spent £105million, Ipswich Town spent £131million and Leicester City spent £78million. All of them are heading back down to the Championship. So Leeds need to find a balance between how much they spend and the quality they sign.
