How new Leeds United man has unlocked £25M star – Daniel Farke handed him a new role this season

Leeds United had one of their best seasons in recent memory under Daniel Farke. After narrowly missing out on promotion the previous season, the Whites bounced back and won promotion with 100 points.

They also lifted the Championship title on the final day. It was a remarkable achievement considering that they lost three of their best players in the summer window. Crysencio Summerville, Georginio Rutter and Archie Gray all joined Premier League clubs.

Daniel Farke barely got any quality replacements – outside Manor Solomon and Ao Tanaka, the other signings were underwhelming. However, one key change the Leeds boss made was reintroducing Brenden Aaronson into the lineup. In his new number 10 role, he had nine league goals and two assists as the team clinched promotion to the Premier League.

Before the season began, there were many rumours that the American would be replaced by a more quality option. Leeds were linked with so many attacking midfielders but failed to sign any. Then came the system change to a 4-3-3 which left fans confused as to what part Aaronson would play this season, with many thinking he would be sold or be on the bench.

After barely playing in the first few games, Daniel Farke decided to start him against Fulham. It was not an unfamiliar position out wide; he had been tried there in pre-season. Even though it did not work in London, Leeds found success in the following games. Aaronson provided stability down the flank, allowing the team to operate around him. Now, the forward has spoken on his new role and the impact of Dominic Calvert-Lewin:

“(Farke) just wants to see me do my game, like how I played last year. Be creative, be creating from the right wing position — if it’s creating chances on the dribble, finding people with through balls, playing close to Dominic Calvert-Lewin at the striker, I’ve been given time to kind of understand the position a little bit more, and grow used to it.”

Daniel Farke outlined Aaronson’s role in team

The Leeds boss gave an explanation as to why Aaronson played against Fulham – for balance. In that game, the American helped neutralize the Londoners’ threat on that flank.

He has also allowed Jayden Bogle more freedom down the right. This new role has brought a bit of balance in the team, and the results have been good so far.
