Questions were raised when Leeds United star Brenden Aaronson missed out of the USMNT squad to face Jamaica on Friday.
Aaronson was named in Mauricio Pochettino’s 25-man squad for the CONCACAF Nations League quarterfinal ties against Jamaica. Former Leeds United midfielder Weston McKennie was also a part of the team.
The Argentine coach won his first game in charge of the USA against Panama, but lost to Mexico a few days later.
Aaronson has been key to Leeds’ success this season, the midfielder has four goals in the championship and is the second top scorer in the team. After an up and down career since arriving at Elland Road, the American has established himself this season.

Aaronson was left out of the match day squad to face Jamaica, prompting speculation that he was injured. The USMNT provided an explanation for why Aaronson was absent from the CONCACAF quarterfinal.
The update on the US national team website read:
“Aaronson experienced flu-like symptoms and did not travel to Jamaica. He is currently in St. Louis and will be joined by the team tomorrow.”
The 24-year old is likely to feature in the second leg of the tie. Aaronson has been a much different player than he was in his early years at Elland Road. Many expected him to leave the club after he spent last season on loan at Union Berlin, but he seems to have turned his career around. The midfielder admitted his motivation behind his performances this season:
“I feel like I’m on top of my game. I think confidence, as professional athletes, that’s probably the biggest thing. You need confidence. I’ve always been a confident guy. I’ve always been someone that, when I step on the pitch, I do my thing, but I think the last two years were a test of my character. I want to say it was something that I needed to go through because it brought the best out of me. I think that everybody goes through ups and downs, besides maybe Messi and Ronaldo. There are going to be seasons where you don’t play, there’s going to be injuries, there’s going to be stuff like this.
“To come back to Leeds and have to fight my way back into the team and show all the supporters why I’m here and what I want to do for this team, that was the biggest thing for me. I think I came back and I did that. It wasn’t easy in moments, but I’m proud of myself, and, yeah, it’s made me the person I am today.”
Great news for Leeds United
Despite criticism from Leeds fans, Aaronson is committed to make an impact at the club. The initial news scared everyone, but the update provided by his national team is great news. With Aaronson fit and firing behind Joel Piroe, Leeds can definitely push for Premier League promotion this year.
