Leeds United should move for ‘driving force’ Gustavo Hamer – analysis

Midfielders seem to be the main topic of discussion at Leeds United this summer. Many believe that after four signings, the club need to address the middle of the park.

The defence has been bolstered with the addition of Jaka Bijol, Sebastiaan Bornauw and Gabriel Gudmundsson. Bijol is expected to fight for a starting spot, as well as Gundmundsson while Bornauw fits in as a rotation option. Leeds were one of the best defences in the Championship, and Daniel Farke will hope they carry this form into the Premier League.

Lukas Nmecha adds some fresh legs to the attack, Joel Piroe now has some competition next season.

Leeds missed out on signing Habib Diarra as Sunderland were willing to pay the £30million asking price. The Black Cats also snapped up Noah Sadiki, who revealed that he held talks with the Whites before choosing to move to the Stadium of Light.

Gustavo Hamer has been a long term target for Leeds United. Daniel Farke pushed for him to be signed last summer, but Sheffield United rejected the bids. Hamer then went on to win EFL Championship Player of the Year, capping off a stunning campaign. Leeds are expected to make an approach for him later this summer.

But another club may have taken the lead; according to Rik Elfrink of the Eindhovens Dagblad, PSV Eindhoven are seriously looking at a move for Hamer:

“English media are now also reporting on Gustavo Hamer,” Elfrink wrote on X. “He’s been in the waiting room at PSV for a while, as they’re looking to strengthen their midfield.”

Sheffield United will try to keep their star

New Blades boss Ruben Selles has been adamant that he will try to keep the star midfielder at the club. Hamer is attracting serious interest from Premier League sides including Leeds, Everton and Fulham.

The race for the Sheffield United talisman could be intense this summer.

Leeds need that driving force in midfield

There were times last season, that Leeds struggled to break down stubborn defences. When teams shut down the threat from wide areas, Leeds looked clueless at times. And teams had a lot of joy doing that because Joel Piroe and Brenden Aaronson would be taken out of the game.

Getting someone like Hamer in would be a huge boost; the 28-year old had 82 key passes and 14 big chances created in the Championship. He also had 71 key passes and 10 big chances created in the 2023/24 Premier League. He is definitely good enough to make the leap.
