‘I don’t know if it was the right club for me…’ – Georginio Rutter makes brutally honest Leeds United admission

Former Leeds United talisman Georginio Rutter has revealed that he initially had his reservations regarding a move to West Yorkshire.

Leeds signed Rutter for a club record fee back in January 2023, with the Whites in the midst of a relegation battle at the time. The hope was for Rutter to be the man to save their season.

This proved not to be the case, however, with the Frenchman going on to start just one game in the Premier League before United were ultimately relegated.

In total, Rutter made 11 league appearances during the 2022/23 campaign for Leeds, failing to score and recording just one assist, with his poor start to life in England justifying the skilful forward questioning his own decision to move to the Whites in the first place.

‘Honestly…’ – Georginio Rutter reveals initial hesitation regarding Leeds United move

Although it didn’t work out in the Premier League with Leeds for Rutter, he went on to become United’s most important player the next season in the Championship under Daniel Farke.

This campaign turned the talented Frenchman into a fan favourite at Elland Road, but prior to that, the narrative surrounding Rutter was very different.

Before he even made the move to Leeds, Rutter opened up about his reservations regarding the transfer during a ‘Big Interview’ for the Premier League.

“Honestly, I don’t know if it was the right club for me because at that time in January, I was at Hoffenheim. We were at a training camp in Portugal, and Leeds called us and me in my head, I was like, I don’t think I’m going to go there.

“I remember they said to me, ‘No, it’s not a joke, they want you now.’ When you speak about football now, Hoffenehim buy me for less than one million, Leeds gave 40 million. I said okay, I’m going to think about it.

“It was a bit difficult at that time because in my head, I was not ready for that. So I signed, I said okay, I sign, and I was happy because it’s the Premier League and everything, but for me, I was not ready, honestly, I was not ready.”

This lack of confidence from Rutter was evident during his 11 Premier League appearances for Leeds, before a year in the Championship helped him adapt to English football.

From one of the biggest transfer flops in Leeds’ history to a fan favourite, Rutter underwent one of the most dramatic transformations of any player at Leeds when it came to how they were perceived by the fanbase.

Since making the move to Brighton, Rutter has continued to show his Premier League-level quality, scoring five goals and notching three assists in his first campaign in the top flight with the Seagulls.
