‘I never thought Leeds United would want me’ – Ex-boss makes stunning revelation

Leeds United remained a big name in English football even when they were missing from the Premier League for more than 15 years, and spent the last two seasons in the Championship before earning promotion again this year.

The 2010s were a torrid period for Leeds as a football club under different volatile owners, such as Massimo Cellino, who appointed some weird managers during their time at Elland Road.

They remained a middling Championship club for most of that decade until Marcelo Bielsa arrived in 2018, and changed the trajectory of Leeds and got them back to the Premier League in 2020.

However, the years preceding Bielsa were not the greatest, and in one of those seasons, Steve Evans was the manager for a year in the 2015/16 campaign.

The Scot was a lovable figure, even though he failed to make much of a Leeds squad that was not good enough and never had enough investment from Cellino.

I never thought I would manage Leeds United – Steve Evans

Leeds finished 13th under Evans in the 2015/16 season and never really threatened to break into the playoff spots. Garry Monk replaced him at the end of the campaign.

However, the Scot has a solid managerial record in the EFL and the lower leagues and has nine promotions in his CV.

He was the manager at Rotherham last season and is keen to return to management again after recovering from a health crisis.

Evans admitted that he would like to take charge of an ambitious League Two club, but stressed that he never expected to manage Leeds, so anything can happen.

“I would like a project, maybe in League Two. That’s the reality”, the former Leeds boss told The Daily Mail.

“But I never thought I would work at Leeds United, and I did. So you never know.”

He pointed at his record of getting teams promoted and building foundations that outlast him at different clubs.

“I have rarely failed in my career. I have either kept clubs up or got them promoted, or put structures in place that are benefiting them now.

“I am ready for more.”

Evans has also revealed his shocking bond with former Leeds boss Marcelo Bielsa, who often messages him.
