When Leeds United were relegated in 2023, it was one of the most hectic campaigns in recent history. The club made multiple managerial changes and still ended up being sent back down to the Championship.
Life after Marcelo Bielsa was very difficult, the Whites could not find a coach on his level – the best they got was Jesse Marsch, who saved them from relegation. But in his first full season, things just went from bad to worse. The club hired and fired multiple coaches between the start of the season and the end of the season.
Even Sam Allardyce could not save the club from relegation, when he was put in charge for the final few weeks of the season.
Georginio Rutter opens up on life at Leeds United
That campaign saw the arrival of Georginio Rutter; the Frenchman became a record transfer for Leeds United. Many at the club thought the Hoffenheim man would deliver and help his club to safety, but he only managed one assist. Rutter got into his groove when Leeds were in the Championship, finishing his first ever campaign there with seven goals and 15 assists. This saw him earn a big money move to Brighton in the Premier League.
The 23-year old has been speaking on his time at Elland Road, where he revealed that his first few months were ‘depressing’:
“After, I started to train, and it was so difficult, and even when I felt the pitch there, I was not good, I didn’t feel good. Because I was a bit depressed the six months before, then I said, I can’t give up, and I walk… it was very tough in the first game, and I said, I can’t. Second game, I can’t.”
“I didn’t feel like Georgi, and after every game I watched highlights from Hoffenheim. I was good, I was confident, and that made me sad. I don’t know what happened, but one day I scored against Ipswich, and after this, Georgi’s back.”
Forward should be an example to Leeds stars
Georginio Rutter should be an example to current Leeds players. Your career does not end after one season; through hard work you can turn things around. Brenden Aaronson is one first team star who is embracing this. The start of his career was not the best, but he has worked his way into becoming a very important part of the first team.
