Illan Meslier could be replaced for just £6M this summer – Leeds United eye deal for experienced international

The fans knew the time had come for Leeds United goalkeeper Illan Meslier during the run in. Daniel Farke’s decision ultimately spelled out the future for the Frenchman.

Errors against Swansea City seemed to be the last straw for the Leeds. The club was chasing promotion, with Burnley and Sheffield United breathing down their necks. Karl Darlow was made first choice for the last seven games of the campaign. Leeds went on to win the league title on the final day.

When the summer transfer window opened, multiple reports stated that the Whites had offered Meslier to multiple teams in an effort to move him.

Trying to offload Meslier was the easy part, finding a quality upgrade on him is now the main focus. Leeds are keen on improving the spine of the team. The club have already made a move for a striker, and are keen on adding a defender and a midfielder.

Some of the goalkeepers linked with a move to Elland Road include Aaron Ramsdale and Sam Johnstone. James Trafford was also linked, but it looks like his preferred destination is Newcastle. Africa Foot are now reporting that Angers are open to selling Yahia Fofana this summer. A fee of around £6million would be enough to complete a deal for the Ivorian international.

Clubs in Italy are also keen on a move for Fofana this summer.

How good is Yahia Fofana?

The 24-year old made his name in the 2023/24 season where he kept 14 clean sheets and conceded just 35 goals. Fofana has kept just seven clean sheets this campaign, but still managed to prevent 13 goals according to expected goals models.

Fofana is young, and could be a good fit on this Leeds United team for years to come. In some ways, it could be a repeat of the Illan Meslier deal. The Frenchman arrived from France as a young keeper, and started out well in England. Fans will be hoping Fofana does much better if a deal is agreed.
