Illan Meslier set for ‘surprise’ move to Premier League club – Leeds United to move on from 25-year-old

Illan Meslier’s future at Elland Road has been up in the air over the past couple of weeks. After he was benched by Leeds United boss Daniel Farke, things have panned out for the club.

After his errors against Swansea City, Farke made the bold call of benching Meslier. Karl Darlow was made the first choice goalkeeper and the results have been clear to see. Since Darlow has been in goal, Leeds have gone on a four game winning streak, conceding just two goals.

Monday’s huge 6-0 home win over Stoke City guaranteed promotion for the Whites. With the club set to play Premier League football next season, there is still a question mark about who will be the club’s number one.

Leeds have been linked with a number of names ahead of this summer. Angus Gunn, Aaron Ramsdale and James Trafford have all been mentioned in reports. The latest one mentions Wolves’ Sam Johnstone as a serious option for the club in the summer.

With one goalkeeper set to arrive, another one is set to leave. According to Phil Hay, Leicester City have emerged as a surprise destination for Illan Meslier.

“Meslier, I struggle to see being first choice at Leeds again. I might be wrong. But the way in which it has happened this season, dropping out of the team on the back of two or three years of downward spiral.

“It makes you think he needs a fresh start and Leeds need to go after a new first-choice goalkeeper. I’d be really surprised if they don’t. I feel like he’s done,”

Leicester could be in the market for a new keeper if their current first choice Mads Hermansen leaves.

Illan Meslier saga set to end

The Frenchman leaving in the summer is the best option for all parties. It is almost impossible that Daniel Farke reverses his decision and makes Meslier first choice next season. The 25 year old is at his highest value, so selling him for a profit could be the best move. Leeds need to solve their goalkeeping problem before their first Premier League game.
