”I’m finally here” – Player speaks on how long it took to complete transfer after Leeds United exit

Leeds United will be hoping most of this season’s signings count for something on the pitch. Last year, Daniel Farke made some strange decisions when it came to team selection.

The German has always been one to stick with something even if it doesn’t work. A clear example was playing both Brenden Aaronson and Joel Piroe when they were out of form in the middle of the season.

While Leeds made some big signings like Ao Tanaka and Manor Solomon that helped them lift the Championship, the other signings did not fare better. Isaac Schmidt and Largie Ramazani were frozen out for most of the season, and limited to cameos near the end of the campaign. Just over a week into the new season, both have been loaned out.

Werder Bremen agreed a deal with Leeds to take Isaac Schmidt on loan early in the summer. But Daniel Farke asked for a replacement before he sanctioned the deal. It took weeks of back and forth between the clubs before James Justin was signed and Isaac Schmidt was allowed to leave.

The defender said he was ready to play for the German club since July:

”Yes, I’m finally here. I think the first phone call from the coach came on 1st July. I spoke with him and with the staff then. Since then, it was clear to me that I wanted to play for Werder.”

When asked why he made the decision to join the Bundesliga side, Schmidt showed his passion for the club and German football as a whole.

”I’ve been familiar with the club for several years now, and Werder are a big club. I also love German football, the Bundesliga and the mentality here. There’s plenty of good football being played here and the fans are fantastic. I also know that both Werder and the head coach, who joined ahead of the season, want to play good football.”

The Switzerland international could make his debut on Saturday, when Bremen take on Bayer Leverkusen.
