Former Leeds United forward Georginio Rutter has revealed what his first interaction with current manager Daniel Farke was like.
The German played a key role in unlocking Rutter’s full potential in a Leeds shirt, with the attacker recently taking a sly dig at two of his former Leeds managers, Javi Gracia and Sam Allardyce.
Rutter initially had doubts over his move to Leeds, but Farke decided to deploy the Frenchman as a number ten, where Rutter thrived and became the heartbeat of the Leeds side that finished third in the Championship after accumulating 90 points.
However, Rutter and Farke’s first interaction wasn’t completley positive, with the former Leeds attacker revealing exactly what happened in a recent interview.
‘He said to me…’ – Georginio Rutter reveals what Daniel Farke’s first message to him was
It’s easy to forget now, but when Farke took over as Leeds manager in 2023, the Whites were a mess.
United had just been relegated, multiple players left the club in unceremonious fashion after activating clauses in their contracts that allowed them to leave on loan and club record signing Rutter was completley devoid of any confidence after having a disastrous first six months in West Yorkshire.
Understandably, at this point, Rutter was very frustrated at Leeds, which he revealed in a recent Big Interview with the Premier League.
“Daniel Farke came, the first thing I said to him is ‘I’m not happy,’ it’s not I’m not happy. I feel bad here, I feel bad because I feel like I’m not a good player, I don’t have confidence, like I didn’t show anything, and people think I’m not good.
“He (Farke) says, it’s normal, I know, it’s normal, I will be the same. He said to me if you leave or not, I don’t know what’s going to happen, but I knew you when you were at Hoffenheim, and you’re a good player.”
This faith instilled in Rutter by Farke completley transformed the trajectory of his Leeds career, as he went on to arguably be the Whites’ best player in a campaign that ultimately ended with heartbreak in the play-off final.
Leeds United may have finally found their Georginio Rutter replacement
After recently securing Facundo Buonanotte’s signature, Leeds will be hoping they have finally replaced Rutter’s creativity in their squad, 18 months after he left the club to join Brighton.
Buonanotte is the first player Leeds have signed since Rutter’s departure who is capable of playing as a natural number ten, with both players’ data from last season suggesting that they are similar types of players.

Whilst data suggests that Rutter is a better dribbler and creative player than Buonanotte by a decent margin, the Argentinian’s ball-carrying abilities, which Rutter was so well known for at Leeds, will be valuable in the centre of the park if Farke chooses to use him there.
At just 21, Buonanotte still has plenty of time to grow and become an even better player than Rutter with the 49ers doing well to add that much-needed creative profile to Farke’s squad.
