Leeds were left once again searching for their first victory of the season as they suffered a 2-1 defeat at the hands of West Ham due to a 90th minute winner by Michail Antonio.
West Ham thought they’d equalised early in the second half as Tomas Soucek converted from close range. However, Kevin Friend was sent to the screen and changed his mind as Antonio was judged to have elbowed Meslier in the build up.
There was a roar around Elland Road when a replay of the incident was shown on the big screen, but former Leeds player Stephen Warncok wasn’t sure if Leeds should have shown it again. “You can here the reaction around the stadium as they show it on the screen – is that even allowed anymore?!” Warnock was shocked.
He went on to defend Antonio. “It was purely accidental it wasn’t malicious.” Antonio had his eyes on the ball in fairness, and obviously didn’t elbow Meslier on purpose. However, it was clear as day that a foul had occurred, and whomever was in charge of the screen was probably just as baffled as most as to how the referee didn’t initially give a foul.
