Italy boss questions how no Serie A side snapped up Leeds forward

Italy boss Roberto Mancini praised Leeds United forward Wilfried Gnonto, questioning how a player of his quality eluded Serie A teams.

Gnonto joined Leeds for around £3.8million and has been a revelation for The Whites. His performance against Liverpool earlier this season made him a fan favourite at Elland Road early in his Leeds career. Italy boss Mancini says he does not understand why no one signed the forward before he got to England:

“Why hasn’t anyone signed Gnonto in Italy?”

“He could play for Sampdoria or Fiorentina. Nobody took him, but he plays as a regular in the Premier League.”

Gnonto first burst onto the scene in the Swiss Super League with FC Zurich, scoring 12 goals and providing 10 assists before turning 19.

Gnonto made his Italy debut last summer and scored against Germany in the UEFA Nations League. The teenager has eight appearances for the Azzuri, scoring one goal. Italy face England on Thursday.
