Italy boss Roberto Mancini said after the game that Wilfried Gnonto’s injury was confirmed to be an ankle sprain.
The Leeds forward had to be helped off the pitch after just 22 minutes in Italy’s game against Malta on Sunday. Initial footage looked like it was a minor incident that could have been walked off, but Gnonto aggravated it and ended up being treated.
A huge blow for Leeds as one of their best performers this season suffers an injury at a crucial point in their campaign. Roberto Mancini says he hopes the injury is not serious:
“Gnonto is dealing with a sprain, I hope it is nothing to worry about.”
“These are matches where you have everything to lose and they get ugly. Not pleasant ones. We did some good things and some less, but it was important to win. We could have scored a few more goals, but these matches are a bit strange.”
Gnonto will return to Leeds and will be assessed by the club’s medical staff ahead of this weekend’s game against Arsenal.
