Leeds United grabbed three crucial points against West Ham United. The win took them six points clear of the drop zone. With one new signing shining bright under the spotlight.
Leeds had one just one game at Elland Road before facing the Hammers. After beating Everton in the season opener, the Whites drew against Newcastle and Bournemouth. A loss to Tottenham was their last home encounter before this.
In all of those home games, manager Daniel Farke deployed the same backline. Gabriel Gudmundsson, Pascal Struijk, Joe Rodon and Jayden Bogle all started those games. But the inclusion of one player completely changed the dynamic.
Leeds United needed Jaka Bijol

Jaka Bijol signed for Leeds in the summer from Udinese. The centre-back arrived after both clubs agreed to a fee. The Slovenian international spent three seasons in the Serie A, honing his craft.
After spending seven games on the bench Bijol was chosen ahead of Pascal Struijk against West Ham. And it turned out to be a game changing call. He was solid at back with 1o clearances in the game. Additionally his two tackles made him the best among centre-backs this term.
His two interceptions was also the best of the night. All in all an impenetrable presence at back.
Bijol is built for this fight
At 6 feet 3 inches tall, the 26-year old is built like a wall. His imposing figure poses a challenge to any attacker coming his way.
The Slovenian’s 10 clearances per 90 minutes make him the topper among all centre-backs. Comparatively Virgil Van Djik averages 9.6 clearances per 90 minutes, while Bournemouth’s Marco Senesi averages 7.9 in third place.
Although many can argue it was just one game. But in that game alone he proved to be improvement with what Leeds have got. The next target though would be keep a clean sheet.
However after a winless run of three games, Elland Road would be happy with the three points for now. Their next fixture is against another relegation avoiders. Facing Brighton away, the Whites will be up against the wall.
Even though The Seagulls are ahead of Leeds by a solitary point, they have been a tough nut to crack this season. Their three wins this season have come against Manchester City, Chelsea and Newcastle United. Two at home and one away at Stamford Bridge.
Daniel Farke’s men might be riding high at the moment, but they have a battle next weekend and Jaka Bijol must feature in it.
