Leeds boss Javi Gracia has backed Illan Meslier after his recent performances raised concern among Leeds fans.
Meslier has been in goal for Leed’s recent results including a 6-1 drubbing by Liverpool, and was on the end of 5 goals from Crystal Palace a few weeks ago. His performances raised a lot of questions, with pundits recently weighing in on the Frenchman’s performances.
Jamie Carragher was vocal about his issues with Meslier in goal after the Liverpool game:
“I’ve never been convinced with the goalkeeper. It looks like they’ve got a kid in goal.”
Former Chelsea man Joe Cole also had comments on Meslier after he flapped at the cross that put Fulham in the lead on Saturday:
“It’s a big call to drop your goalkeeper.”
“I would take him out for his good and the team’s good.”
Gracia however, is adamant that Leed’s defensive troubles lie within the team and just not on the goalkeeper:
“It’s not only about the keeper, it’s about the team. If we are better I think the keeper will be better too.”
The Whites face Wolves and Bournemouth this week as they fight to stay in the Premier League next season.
