Journalist Graeme Bailey has claimed that Joe Gelhardt is on Premier League wages at Leeds, which is one of the key reasons why he stayed at Elland Road last summer.
Gelhardt was a bit-part player at Leeds last season and only two of his ten Championship appearances came in the starting eleven for the Whites.
The 22-year-old striker was expected to move on from Leeds in the summer but at the end of the transfer window, he is still at Elland Road.
Some have been left dismayed that the striker and his representatives didn’t try to leave Leeds in the last window but that could be down to the kind of money he is earning with the Yorkshire giants.
Journalist claims Joe Gelhardt is on far too much money at Leeds currently
Bailey revealed that the striker is earning Premier League wages while being in the Championship with Leeds at this stage of his career.
His huge salary package is one of the biggest reasons why he didn’t leave Leeds in the summer transfer window as he was unlikely to earn at that level anywhere else.
He is not ruling out that Gelhardt could play a part for Leeds but he feels it would be desperate if the team need him to be pivotal between now and the January transfer window.
“I think so, but he [Gelhardt] is on huge money at Leeds”, Bailey told LeedsUnited.News
“That is the reason he is still at Leeds, he’s being paid far too much money. He got Premier League wages.
“He might play apart but I don’t envisage it that much between now and January. Not that you wish ill on anyone, but you’d hope he isn’t needed between now and January.”
Gelhardt started in Leeds’ 3-0 EFL Cup defeat against Middlesbrough but has only made one substitute appearance from the bench in the Championship this season.
