Joe Gelhardt seems lost at Leeds United at the moment. He is not getting any game time under Daniel Fark and is wasting precious time of his career sitting on the bench at Elland Road. The striker has practically wasted the last six months after a decent loan spell at Sunderland and desperately needs a move away from the Whites in the January transfer window.
Farke would be loath to weaken his squad in the January transfer window but losing Gelhardt should not mean much as he has played just nine minutes of league football over two substitute appearances.
The Leeds boss has not given the forward the opportunities he would have wanted and it is only natural that he doesn’t stand in the striker’s way if he gets an offer to leave, even if temporarily, in the January transfer window.
Gelhardt still remains a highly-rated attacking talent and a few clubs in the Championship have their eyes on the striker ahead of the transfer window opening next month.
West Brom are amongst the sides who have their eyes on him and are considering signing the Leeds forward on loan in the winter transfer window.
Leeds should absolutely sanction the move if they get an offer from the Baggies as Gelhardt desperately needs to play more football to avoid watching his career stall indefinitely.
Former West Brom star backs the club to sign Joe Gelhardt
Don Goodman has insisted that it would make sense for West Brom to sign the Leeds striker on loan as they need to add more goals to their squad.
He believes West Brom would give the striker an ideal platform to rekindle his career and it would be an opportunity for him to have a reset away from Leeds.
Goodman also insisted that it would be a win-win situation for all involved if West Brom manage to sign Gelhardt in the January transfer window.
“I would say there’s nothing to lose by going down that route, really. Very different type to [Josh] Maja. Very easy to see them playing in the team together, rather than it being one or the other”, Goodman said.
“He’s another one. He’s a little bit like Maja in that he wants to kickstart his career again because it hasn’t really worked out for him at Leeds United. I know he had a little loan spell at Sunderland and there were glimpses of what he was capable of. But he’s another player that just needs to sort of reset and go again, really.
“So for him to leave Leeds and be allowed to go to West Brom on loan, I think would be a win-win all around, if I’m honest with you. So yeah, it would make logical sense.”
Gelhardt and his agent must do everything to ensure that Leeds let him leave the club in the winter window because he desperately needs a move.
He will be under pressure at West Brom
A move to West Brom would allow Joe Gelhardt to play for one of the teams who are vying to finish in the playoff spots at the end of the season but that could bring more pressure.
The striker had a reasonable loan spell at Sunderland last season but the Black Cats were a midtable team and were not under the same sort of pressure.
West Brom would want an instant impact if they sign Gelhardt and he could either rise up to that challenge or his career could further stall at the Hawthorns.
However, the presence of Carlos Corberan in the West Brom dugout would come as a sense of assurity for the striker if he decides to join the Baggies. The Spaniard coached him at Leeds previously and is well aware of his strengths and weaknesses.
If Gelhardt manages to prove himself in a team who are vying for promotion it would also sent a message to Leeds and Daniel Farke.
