Joel Piroe had his chances last season, just must wait now – Former Leeds star

Former Leeds United star Paul Robinson has insisted that the goal from Joel Piroe against Hull City last weekend should not get him into the starting eleven against Burnley after the international break.

Piroe came on from the bench in the second half against the Tigers last Saturday and scored in Leeds’ 2-0 win in the Championship at Elland Road.

The Dutchman has lost his place in the starting eleven and has made just one start in Leeds’ opening four Championship games this season.

Daniel Farke has preferred to start Mateo Joseph up top with Brenden Aaronson playing as the number 10 behind him.

Piroe showed his ability to finish off chances against Hull but Robinson feels that it should not be enough to get in the starting eleven yet.

Paul Robinson stressed that Joel Piroe must wait for his chances this season

The former Leeds goalkeeper pointed out that Farke finally has a good squad and options to choose from and Piroe did get plenty of chances last season where his inconsistencies infuriated many fans.

He understands the clamour for the attacker to get back in the eleven but insisted that one goal should not be enough to change Farke’s plans yet given the starting eleven looked good in the last two games.

Robinson feels some of the players will now have to wait for their chances and he is not expecting the Leeds manager to make any changes against Burnley after the international break.

“The manager has now got the opportunity where he’s got a squad to choose from. Piroe had his opportunities last season, starting the campaign really well, but his inconsistency is what fans found frustrating”, the former goalkeeper told MOT Leeds News.

“When you come off the bench and have that kind of impact, there’s always going to be a clamour for that player to start the next game. But the team that has played the last two games looks strong, and that’s what Farke wants.

“So, players like Dan James, Max Wober, Joe Gelhardt, and Patrick Bamford, when they do get given a chance, they have to do what Piroe did at the weekend. Does he start? No, I think he goes with the same team.”
