Jon Newsome highlighted a worrying statistic about the inefficiency Leeds United have shown during attacking corners and insisted that it is something they need to improve if they have to score more goals.
Leeds scored a comfortable 2-0 win over Cardiff City away from home on Saturday while controlling 80 percent of the possession and being by far the dominant team.
However, Leeds did need a late goal from substitute Joel Piroe to put the game to bed and again missed several good opportunities to kill the game off earlier.
Their inability to convert chances into goals has again been highlighted as a worrying sign but Newsome is also wary of Leeds’ lack of potency from set-piece situations.
Leeds have not scored a goal from an attacking corner since a game against Swansea City in February.
Former Leeds United defender is worried about lack of goals from set-pieces
Newsome has stressed that set-pieces have become a major part of the game and teams who score a lot of goals also find the back of the net regularly from dead ball situations.
Leeds have not scored a goal in over 150 corners and the former White insisted that it is a worrying number, especially for a side that also struggle to hit the back of the net regularly from open play.
“It’s a huge part of the game”, Newsome said on BBC Radio Leeds.
“Howard Wilkinson identified it 35 years ago and the teams that are good at set-pieces, score more goals.
“We have not scored a goal in over 150 corners.
“That’s a stat you really don’t want hanging around your neck.”
Daniel Farke will have time to prepare his team ahead of Leeds taking on Coventry City at Elland Road on Saturday.
Leeds have scored the least number of goals alongside Sheffield United amongst the current top six after six league games.
