Junior Firpo makes shock transfer revelation – Leeds United star eyes future in Spain

Leeds United have some heavy decisions to make this summer. With the club having sealed Premier League promotion, the next stop is to shape the team to compete next season.

Leeds fans will hope the transfer business will not be a repeat of what happened last summer. Daniel Farke only got a flurry of signings just days before the transfer window closed. But it all worked out in the end, as the Leeds boss guided the team to another successful season. Last year’s play-off final nightmare will be behind the fans as they can look forward to the Premier League.

Signing new players will be important, but this summer, some decisions will be made on current first team players.

Over the past week, Junior Firpo has been in the news for comments on his future. The defender is out of contract this summer, and as it stands, his future is up in the air. After an incredible season, and Premier League promotion, many people would think he wants to remain at Elland Road.

But his recent interview with Marca (via Mundo Deportiv0) says otherwise. Firpo mentions that he would like to return to his former club Real Betis in the future:

“Returning to Spain, well… Especially returning to Betis. It’s an option I always have open. I’ve never hidden it. If I tell you that I’ve found it like a home here in Leeds, I’m telling you that Betis is my home. I’m a Betis fan, everyone knows that, and it’s in my blood.”

Leeds cannot let a quality player go

Junior Firpo has been reliable this season. He has also been a wide threat on his own down the left. The left back has four goals and nine assists in a particularly productive year. Sofascore’s rating algorithm ranks Firpo as the best performer in the Championship this season.

Leeds losing the 28-year old would be bad news. The only natural left back option left if Firpo departs this summer would be Isaac Schmidt. The club would have to find reinforcements in that area, which could cost more than a new deal for the player would eventually be.
