Junior Firpo’s future at Leeds United: Expert provides key update

Leeds United vs Valencia

Leeds United have two players whose contracts are expiring soon, allowing them to sign pre-contract agreements once the January transfer window opens in a couple of months.

Junior Firpo and Sam Byram are both in the final year of their contracts, and discussions about extensions will take place when the time is right. As it stands, unless there are any undisclosed extension clauses, both full-backs are on track to see their contracts end next June.

Firpo has drawn interest from his former club, Real Betis, in the past two transfer windows. If Leeds United remains in the Championship, he might think twice about committing to another season in the second tier.

Earlier this month, transfer expert Graeme Bailey shared insights on Firpo’s contract situation. He mentioned that he “would be surprised” if the £13 million player agrees to a new deal at Elland Road, noting that the decision will likely hinge on whether Leeds secures promotion.

“I would be surprised personally [if he signed a new deal],” Bailey said. “But it will depend on what division Leeds are in, it really does. I think he has been okay for Leeds, but it will depend on whether they go up or not.

“If Leeds don’t go up, he will probably be looking at going to the top-flight himself won’t he to be fair to him. We’ll see on that one, the division will dictate everything really.”

Bailey has shared a fresh update with LeedsUnited.News regarding Firpo’s situation. He suggests that Leeds are not in a hurry to make a decision since Firpo is on “really good money.”

“I haven’t heard anything in particular,” Bailey said. “He’s on really good money. I don’t think they’ll be handing out a long-term contract on his current salary. He’s done pretty well this year, but his contract over his term at Leeds has probably exceeded his performances somewhat. He’s late 20s now.

“There’s more chance he stays if they go up because I think he’s a very solid performer at that level. Would they want to upgrade? Possibly. But I think it would depend on who’s interested in him.

“I think it’s one not to particularly worry about. They’ll attack it, see around easter time and you’ll have a very good idea whether you are Premier League or playoff-bound bound and they’ll probably look at it then.”
