Ipswich could end former Leeds United star’s loan

Football Insider recently reported that Ipswich Town might end former Leeds United Kalvin Phillips’ loan in January if he doesn’t show he’s fully fit.

The club are reportedly surprised by the 28-year-old’s lack of mobility and endurance, suggesting he’s not yet at the level of a Premier League player. Some at the club feel Phillips’ heart is still with Leeds United, and he may be eyeing a return to Elland Road.

Phillips had a tough loan stint with West Ham during the second half of the 2023-24 season, managing only 10 first-team appearances before eventually being left out of the squad.

This season, he’s made six appearances across all competitions following a period of early-season injuries.

After Ipswich Town’s thrilling 4-3 loss to Brentford, manager Kieran McKenna addressed the speculation surrounding the future of Phillips. He strongly dismissed claims that the Premier League team is considering cutting his loan short in January.

“What can I say on that? Proper, proper nonsense,” McKenna said (h/t Leeds Live). “I learned quite a while ago in football that you can write something online and it circulates and gets picked up by quite a lot of media outlets and then it becomes a story. It’s absolute nonsense. There have been no conversations of the like and I think it’s a real, real shame. He had a very good game.”

Things haven’t gone smoothly for Phillips since he left Leeds United in the summer of 2022. He hasn’t been able to impress Pep Guardiola at Manchester City, which led to a loan move to West Ham United in the latter half of last season.

Unfortunately, Phillips struggled to find his best form with the Hammers and couldn’t secure a consistent spot in the starting lineup. It will be interesting to see whether there’s a reunion between the Whites and Phillips or whether that chapter is closed for good.

Nonetheless, as long as Leeds United remain in the Championship, the midfielder and his Premier League wages might be too rich for the club. Now, if Daniel Farke gets this squad promoted then perhaps there can be discussions of a second stint at Elland Road for Phillips.
