Latest update suggests former Bundesliga star will join Leeds United

Leeds United’s midfield is looking a bit thin after injuries to Ethan Ampadu and Ilia Gruev. To strengthen their options, the Whites are considering various free agents, including Josuha Guilavogui, who appears to be the guy that the Yorkshire side will sign.

On Friday, the veteran was pictured in Leeds United’s after the win over Sheffield United. The talk surrounding this move increased, and this was furthered with Leeds boss Daniel Farke green-lighting a free agent signing this week.

The 34-year-old is a French international with seven caps and has become a prominent figure at VfL Wolfsburg, where he made 250 appearances and served as the club captain.

The midfielder established himself as a standout player with Saint-Étienne, making 120 appearances across all competitions, scoring nine goals, and registering seven assists. Moreover, he would win a Coupe de La Ligue with the Ligue 1 side during the 2012-13 season.

Ao Tanaka and Joe Rothwell are providing the midfield play for Leeds United, but they need depth behind them should they ever get injured or face suspension.

Guilavogui spent last season in the Bundesliga playing for Mainz 05, but once his contract expired, the veteran midfielder remained a free agent. It appears the player has been with the Leeds United squad for a few days as the club decides whether to sign him.

On Tuesday night, the Frenchman was again captured at the contest to see Leeds’ 2-1 win over Watford. Moreover, Leeds Live’s Beren Cross made a comment on the picture and stated what could happen next after the player is seen at the past two Leeds United matches.

“A second Elland Road appearance for Guilavogui,” Cross wrote on X. “Looks like he could be the one for Farke.”

Guilavogui offers a wealth of experience and could play a vital role for the Whites in the short term as they await the return of key players from injury. While he hasn’t played in England before, he’s competed in top leagues in France, Spain, and Germany.

If the veteran midfielder can be Leeds United’s depth piece until their starts return, it will be well worth signing.
