Leeds newcomer chose club’s ‘tradition and rich history’ over Bundesliga offers, agent revealed

Isaac Schmidt was one move that Leeds United made in the final hours of the summer transfer window. Moreover, his agent recently shared why the 24-year-old opted to leave a club in the UEFA Europa Conference League in FC St. Gallen for England’s second tier.

Schmidt arrived at Elland Road on August 30 after the Whites reportedly paid £4.6 million for the player and signed him to a four-year contract. A sell-on clause and additional bonuses will be part of the deal, as United has offered the Lausanne-born player a “lucrative multi-year contract” to bring him to England.

Why did Isaac Schmidt decide to join Leeds?

After scoring in a Europa Conference League play-off for St. Gallen, Isaac Schmidt found himself boarding a private jet to Yorkshire to finalize his transfer to Leeds. Some may wonder why he made the move, but his agent, Steven Lang, offered an explanation.

“Other clubs were interested, including Bundesliga clubs, but Leeds are a club with tradition and a rich history,” Lang told Leeds Live. “For us, it was clear that joining Leeds and moving to England was a great opportunity for Isaac.

“The project perfectly matched what we were looking for so we didn’t hesitate. It’s the fact that such a great club must return to the Premier League.”

Leeds manager Daniel Farke made it clear when he spoke to Schmidt, promising they’d achieve “big things together.” The new arrival is eager to help take Leeds back where he believes they belong.

Schmidt made 108 appearances for FC St. Gallen during his tenure with the Swiss club. The player also scored seven goals and recorded 10 assists while playing left-back and right-back at various times.

The defender has yet to make an appearance for Leeds, but given the grueling Championship season and the FA Cup, there will be opportunities for him to play to keep the squad rotated and fresh.

It will be up to Schmidt to take advantage of any opportunities to ensure Farke sees him as a player the manager can count on. It will be interesting to see if this signing proves to be a successful one for Leeds.
