Leeds and West Ham remain in battle for £30 million midfielder

Leeds United are coming into this transfer window full of optimism after an impressive first season back in the top flight. After finishing ninth and playing an exciting brand of football all season, the club are on the up and surely anyone would love to join the Whites at this moment in time.

Recent reports from La Nuova Sardegna have suggested that Marcelo Bielsa’s side are ready to activate the £30 million release clause of Cagliari midfielder Nahitan Nandez. The 25-year-old Uruguayan international has impressed since joining the Italian side in 2019. He was one of the few bright sparks last campaign as the club sunk to 16th in the league leading many to believe that he’d be happy to join a rising giant like Leeds United.

That said, a new report from CalcioMercato has plunged the potential transfer into doubt. The report claims to reveal how Nandez perceives Leeds and suggests that he is not convinced by the project unfolding at Elland Road.

With Leeds in desperate need for reinforcements in midfield following the departure of Pablo Hernandez and the injury problems of Kalvin Phillips, this news is a big blow in their pursuit of a player who would be ideal for the club.

Nandez will make a decision on his future after the Copa America, no doubt leaving Leeds fans nervous about what his verdict could be.

Other clubs have also shown an interest in Nandez, including West Ham, who are now favourites to sign the former Boca Juniors star and are believed to be preparing a bid before the end of the month.

But don’t yet rule out Leeds and the pulling power of manager Marcelo Bielsa, who has played a massive part in the Whites signings the likes of German international Robin Koch and Spanish stars Diego Llorente and Rodrigo in last summer’s transfer window.
