Leeds boss reveals how player reacted to being benched vs Man City

Leeds boss Sam Allardyce shed light on how Illan Meslier reacted to team news on Saturday.

The French goalkeeper had previously started all 34 of Leeds’ Premier League games this season. However, new boss Sam Allardyce dropped him for Joel Robles in the defeat to Man City.

Robles had a very good performance for his first league start of the season, he saved four out of six shots on Saturday. He also looked confident when coming out during set pieces and was on hand to sweep in behind the defence when needed.

Big Sam shares what happened when he told Meslier about the decision to drop him:

“A massive call. One of the worst things you have to do going in as a manager is to take your goalkeeper out. There’s not a lot I can knock Joel’s performance with,” Allardyce said.

“Not very happy. I didn’t expect him to be very happy. But with what we’d watched, I think the rest will do him good.”

Robles may continue to the end of the season based on what he showed on Saturday afternoon.
