Leeds close in on first major summer signing

It’s that time of year. The transfer window is open and strange dealings are going on. For every deal that seems a sure thing there’s a deal that seems headed for a simple conclusion only for an unexpected spanner to hit the works.

That’s exactly what has happened in Leeds’ pursuit of Nahitan Nandez which until now seemed a simple deal. Nandez had a 36 million euros release clause in his contract at Cagliari which Leeds were set to activate.

However, now a loan deal is on the cards. That said, this won’t be your run of the mill loan and could benefit Leeds overall.

It’s now reported by La Nouva Sardegna in Italy that Leeds are looking to snatch the Uruguayan international on a year long loan for 15 million euros before making the deal permanent after a year through an obligation to buy and a further 15 million euros. That would take the deal up to 30 million euros meaning not only would Leeds only have to spend 15 million on the player now but it would also save Leeds six million euros in total meaning Leeds are now more likely to pull the trigger and bring in the midfielder.

Leeds have done a similar deal in the past to bring in Helder Costa. However, United fans will be hoping that Nandez enjoys more success at Elland Road than Costa has since joining from Wolves in 2019.

Nandez could very well pull on the white of Leeds for the first time against Cagliari if rumours are to be believed as Leeds prepare for a friendly against the Italian outfit in a repeat of the 2019 pre-season game against the same opposition.
