Leeds United had their unbeaten streak end at St. James’ Park on Wednesday night.
Facing Manchester United, Liverpool and Newcastle in consecutive games was always going to be difficult. But Farke’s men managed to get two draws, including a 0-0 result at Anfield.
In those games, it looked like Leeds had everything figured out ahead of their game against the Magpies. And with how they started the game on Wednesday night, some would have tipped them to walk away with a win.
Brenden Aaronson opened the scoring, continuing his fine form since his return to the lineup. Harvey Barnes equalized minutes later, before Dominic Calvert-Lewin scored from the spot to make it 2-1 before half time.
The second half saw a flurry of goals; Joelinton drew Newcastle level before Aaronson scored his second of the game to hand Leeds a 3-2 lead. Farke’s side held the lead into injury time but dropped the ball as the Magpies found a late equalizer and eventually a winner from Harvey Barnes.
Danny Murphy gives verdict on Leeds United result
Many who were watching the game, including Danny Murphy, thought that the Whites deserved at least something from the game:
“For Leeds, unbeaten in seven until this point. Probably feel like they deserve more points over the last few weeks than they’ve got.
“Making chances, scoring goals, confident in their play, playing through the lines, and Farke and Aaronson, both who’ve had criticism earlier in the season, are probably in their best moments.
“Farke’s making really good decisions, picking the right teams, right formations.
“Aaronson’s been terrific for a few weeks now, and I do feel for him for the penalty because he scored a couple of great goals. Leeds deserved something, the fans watching that for Leeds can be positive now for the next few weeks.”
Defeat should not derail Leeds’ season
The Whites played very well on their unbeaten streak, but losing it should not mean the end of the world. Daniel Farke has done a very good job with his tactics and team selection recently and it is paying off.
The team are still opening a gap between themselves and the relegation zone, and have now lost just one game in their last seven. Leeds are far better than their relegation rivals and the team must continue to play like it. This weekend gives Daniel Farke the chance to rotate as the season enters a very crucial period.
