Leeds United marked their return from the international break with a crucial 2-0 win over Sheffield United at Elland Road on Friday night, a key result against a promotion rival.
After a goalless first half, Leeds picked up the pace in the second. Pascal Struijk broke the deadlock in the 69th minute, and Mateo Joseph sealed the win with a late strike in the 90th, securing all three points.
Illan Meslier, coming off a draw with Sunderland, put in a solid performance, earning a clean sheet. Following draws against West Bromwich Albion, Norwich City, and Sunderland, as well as a loss to Burnley, this victory gives Leeds a much-needed confidence boost.
Suspension alert for Leeds players
Leeds need to regroup quickly as they take on Watford this Tuesday night, following the latter’s Saturday loss to Luton Town. The Whites are pushing for a second straight win to maintain their grip on second place as the competition heats up.
Even though all the focus is on Leeds’ injury crisis due to the injuries to Ethan Ampadu and Ilia Gruev the depth will continue to be tested as now there are a couple of players who could be out of the lineup if they receive a yellow card in the match against Watford.
Junior Firpo, Joe Rodon, and Jayden Bogle are now just one booking away from a suspension. Firpo received a late yellow card in last night’s game, leaving all three players with nine matches until December 7 to avoid another booking.
Considering they’ve already picked up four yellow cards in just 10 games, it’s going to be a tough challenge, and Farke’s group may soon face some serious tests.
Should Firpo and Bogle be suspended at some point, Leeds do have depth behind them. Although, the two full backs are crucial to Farke’s system this season, he won’t want to lose them either.
If Rodon were to receive a ban, it would create more of a headache for Farke. James Debayo is waiting for his debut, but it’s still unclear if Farke believes he’s ready for the challenge.
