On Tuesday night, Leeds United confirmed the appointment of Daniel Farke as First Team Manager on a four year deal.
Execute Vice President of Football Operations at Leeds United Paraag Marathe spoke on Tuesday citing Daniel Farke’s record in the Championship as the reason for his appointment. However, there is evidence in the German’s career that point to the fact that Leeds fans should be a bit worried about this appointment.
Transfer record
In his four year stay at Norwich City, Farke spent €106,816,000 on players according to Transfermarkt. The issue with his signings is not the spending – Leeds have spent over €100m twice in the last five seasons. The problem is with the talent identification; most of the players he signs immediately depart after a season or two, or fail to deliver.
His two most expensive signings at the club; Milot Rashica and Tziolis left the club after a few seasons.
Premier League record
Although Farke has led Norwich to the Premier League two times, winning the Championship twice; his Premier League record has been abysmal. Under Farke, Norwich have finished bottom in the Premier League both times they’ve been promoted. This points to the fact that when Farke eventually takes Leeds back to the top flight, their stay there is not guaranteed under his guidance.
Borussia Monchenglabach stint
The most worrying is his last coaching job at Borussia Mönchengladbach. He only managed to average 1.28 points per match, finishing in 10th place. He also won less points (43) than the club had in the Bundesliga last season (45). A sign that he could not improve a higher level club after one full season, Leeds United fans are in for a very interesting ride when Farke takes charge.
