Leeds boss Daniel Farke hits back at critics over strikers’ finishing concerns

Even after Leeds United’s win against Cardiff City last weekend, pundits are still worried that the Whites lack a reliable finisher in the No. 9 role.

Leeds struggled to create chances in the second half against Cardiff, managing only four shots despite having a man advantage. It wasn’t until Joël Piroe scored in the 87th minute that they finally secured the win.

The Whites have found it tough to replace the goals lost with the summer departures of Georginio Rutter and Crysencio Summerville, making it a challenging season up front.

If Farke chooses not to play Piroe up front, he has Mateo Joseph and Patrick Bamford as alternatives. However, pundit Paul Robinson believes this isn’t the best option for Leeds, as Bamford’s injury history makes it hard for the manager to rely on him staying fit, especially during key matches.

“Of course, it’s a worry,” Robinson told MOT Leeds News. “All of the goalscoring burden is on Mateo Joseph. Without Patrick Bamford, you’re looking at Joel Piroe, but he doesn’t normally play as a No.9.

“Leeds are light in that area, and you can’t rely on Bamford to be fit for a whole season. We’ve seen that before in recent seasons and it’s a big ask for Joseph.”

Daniel Farke isn’t worried about No. 9 position

Ahead of Leeds’ matchup against Coventry City this weekend, manager Daniel Farke made it known that he is not concerned about the striker position and is happy with what he’s seen so far.

“I wouldn’t judge it so strict that right now you have to deliver or you’re on the bench,” Farke said (h/t The Yorkshire Evening Post). “Sometimes you have to consider the load. Three games in six days, you have to mix it up sometimes to have fresh legs on the pitch and sometimes due to the tactical necessities. Sometimes you need a more physical striker, or pace etc. There is pressure to deliver in every position. You have to grab your chances.

“When we speak about striker position like Mateo Joseph, I’m happy with his season so far, his workload is great, an important assist for Ramazani. It’s always good for the confidence and mood and rhythm if you score but overall he was impressive in pre-season, important goal against Hull, scored for his country, three assists under his belt.”
