Leeds forward set to ditch super sub status and seize starting XI spot, claims ex-player

Joël Piroe has turned himself into the super sub for Leeds United manager Daniel Farke. However, that role could end soon if one journalist is accurate with his information.

Leeds put on a commanding performance in the first half against Coventry City during Saturday’s 3-0 victory, taking 10 shots while the visitors failed to register a single attempt. They took the lead early on in the 16th minute, with Wilfried Gnonto scoring to make it 1-0.

In the second half, Leeds shifted gears and only managed three shots, but it was enough to secure two more goals. Jayden Bogle netted one just after the break in the 49th minute, making it 2-0. Then, substitute Piroe added another in the 79th minute, marking his second goal in consecutive matches.

LUFC Data on X highlighted that Piroe netted five of his eight goals for Leeds in 2024 after the 75th minute while coming off the bench.

It’ll be intriguing to see what Farke decides to do with Piroe. Will he stick with him as a super-sub, given his success in that role, or will he try him out as a starter at some point this season?

Will Joël Piroe come into the starting 11?

David Norris believes Piroe will shake off his “super-sub” label and secure a starting position in Farke’s starting 11, especially now that the matches are piling up.

The 25-year-old forward has found the net three times as a substitute in his last four games, yet he has only started one Championship match this season. Nonetheless, that appears to be changing ahead of a busy week for Leeds who have to face Norwich City and Sunderland.

“It’s something I’ve spoken about a lot as Piroe keeps delivering as a super sub off the bench, and I like him,” the ex-Leeds midfielder told MOT Leeds News.

“I think he’s a consistent finisher, he makes an impact off the bench and he’s one of the team’s main goal threats. I still back him in the long-term to be a starter, and I believe he’ll eventually get that regular game time and convert the chances Leeds create.”
