Leeds’ hopes dashed as summer target commits to Freiburg with contract extension

Bruno Ogbus is emerging as a top defensive prospect.

Leeds United was linked to various players this summer as the club sought to bolster its positions and made another attempt to secure promotion to the Premier League.

This past transfer window, the Whites were linked to Freiburg defender Bruno Ogbus in August as Leeds looked to improve their backline with more depth to withstand the grind of the Championship.

In August, Football Insider reported that Leeds had an active interest in Ogbus. Daniel Farke aimed to recruit both a left-back and a right-back to provide cover for new signing Jayden Bogle this season.

Nonetheless, the Bundesliga club was not in a hurry to sell the left-back during that transfer window. As a result, no deal occurred, and while it wouldn’t be out of the question to revisit this file during the January transfer window, that will now not be the case after the latest developments.

Leeds target Bruno Ogbus extends contract with Freiburg

On Monday, the German club announced that they have agreed on an early contract extension for the 18-year-old defender. However, the financial terms of the extension weren’t revealed.

“Bruno caught our attention after a great season with the U19s as well as with his displays for the second team last year. He has continued to develop after a seamless transition into the first team during pre-season,” said sporting director Klemens Hartenbach.

“His tough tackling and speed are really impressive, and his versatility across the back line is a real asset. We hope to be able to assist his development together going forward.”

Ogbus arrived at the Freiburg academy from Grasshopper Club Zurich’s youth set-up in January 2022, initially drafted into the U19 team. Although the player is only a teenager, Farke showed with Archie Gray last season that he can put his trust in a young player who is ready for that responsibility to play a prominent role in the squad.

It will be interesting to see if Leeds revisits the interest in adding more depth to the full-back positions, considering that the squad is hindered by injuries and that it’s only the start of the season.
