Leeds’ 25-year-old sensation continues super sub status after win over Coventry

Joël Piroe has turned himself into the super sub for Leeds United manager Daniel Farke. If the German tactician needs a second-half goal to close out a match, the Dutchman has responded.

Leeds dominated the first half against Coventry City in Saturday’s 3-0 win, firing 10 total shots while the away team didn’t manage a single one. They took the lead in the 16th minute thanks to a goal from Wilfried Gnonto, putting them ahead 1-0.

After the break, Leeds didn’t take as many shots, managing just three, but that was enough to add two more goals. Jayden Bogle scored in the 49th minute to make it 2-0, and Piroe, coming off the bench again, found the net in the 79th minute for his second consecutive match.

Joël Piroe is garnering super sub status

While the second half left much to be desired from an attacking perspective, the squad did score two more goals to wrap up the victory and three points. Moreover, Piroe is having an impressive 2024 coming off the bench and scoring in the final minutes of the match for Leeds.

LUFC Data on X pointed out that the 25-year-old has now scored five of his eight goals for Leeds in 2024 after the 75th minute of matches as a substitute.

It will be interesting to see what Farke does with Piroe. Does he keep him in that super-sub role and not mess with a good thing, or does he experiment with him as a starter at some point this season?

Leeds must turn the page on this contest as they’ll have a Tuesday clash against Norwich City; then, on Friday, the Whites face Sunderland.

The highlight of this stretch of games will be the matchup against Sunderland, who currently sit second in the table. It’s an excellent chance for Leeds to prove they can compete with other promotion contenders.

If the Whites want to secure six points this week, they’ll need Piroe to keep scoring as he’s doing off the bench to provide that second-half threat should the squad need a goal to level the scoring or close out the match to secure all three points.
