In their last three matches, the Leeds United defense have conceded one goal and the backline are among the best in the Championship as a stat shows.
Leeds had many goals leave this past summer with the departures of Crysencio Summerville and Georginio Rutter. Although the Whites have scored goals, their promotion hopes could hinge on another aspect of their game.
The Whites’ defense stands out as the strongest part of the squad, with Daniel Farke opting for Pascal Struijk and Joe Rodon as his center-back pairing for the first four matches of the 2024-25 season. It’s no surprise, given that both players are ranked among the top five defenders in the league.
It’ll be intriguing to watch this season whether this center-back duo can stay healthy and help drive the team toward promotion. So far, the defense has been the key to keeping the squad competitive in their matches.
Leeds’ defense continues to be one of the best in the Championship
The Lower Tiers spotlighted on X the best defenses in terms of goals conceded per game. Farke and his team are in a four-way tie for fourth place, conceding only 0.6 goals per game. On the positive side, the Yorkshire side’s defense limits the opposition’s attack to keep themselves in matches to allow themselves to take points.
However, the bad news is that two promotional rivals are ahead of them in goals conceded per 90 minutes. Third-place side Sheffield United (0.4) and second-place team Burnley (0.5) have as good a defense as Leeds, which the Whites saw in person when Burnley defeated them 1-0 at Elland Road.

It will be interesting to see if Leeds can ride their defense to a Premier League promotion for next season. If they stay healthy, Farke and his team will be in matches, and it will be up to their attack to find the goal-scoring to secure all three points.
The Leeds attack has shown that it can take advantage of clean sheets, such as the matches against Cardiff City and Coventry City, but it has also wasted them, such as the scoreless draw against West Bromwich Albion earlier this season.
