Leeds legend Dorigo outlines points total needed for Premier League safety

Legendary Leeds United defender Tony Dorigo has claimed that a final points tally of 38 will be enough to see his former side avoid relegation from the Premier League this season.

Dorigo’s prediction comes with the Whites currently 16th in the league table, just two points above the drop zone.

As it stands, Leeds have picked up 29 points from 30 games – meaning that they would need to pick up 9 points from their remaining 8 matches to reach Dorigo’s total.

The West Yorkshire side’s remaining fixtures are something of a mixed bag, as they are set to meet three of England’s traditional ‘big six’ teams before the season’s end: Manchester City, Tottenham, and Liverpool.

Yet many of their games during the run-in appear winnable as they are due to lock horns with fellow league strugglers Bournemouth, Leicester and West Ham.

Dorigo remains confident that Leeds will reach 38 points, but that due to the nature of their matches and the tightly contested league table this year, the survival battle will go down to the last weekend.

“You are going to be going right up to that last game wondering who is doing what and where”, Dorigo told Yorkshire Evening Post.

“But I think 38 should just about get the job done and, looking at the fixtures, if we play to our maximum, then that’s perfectly sensible that we will get those.

“But we have to play well and of course you have to deserve your spot to stay in the Premier League.

“I think even beforehand there were no illusions and now I suppose we should be doubled down to say, ‘right, it’s going to be a real fight here and we need everyone on board and going in the same direction to get what we need’.”

The Whites welcome Jurgen Klopp’s Liverpool to Elland Road on Monday looking to put a humbling 1-5 home defeat against Crystal Palace last Sunday behind them.
