Leeds legend tells club to sign ex-Man Utd keeper

Leeds United are having a superb season in the Premier League. They are well in the hunt for a top half finish despite being in their first Premier League campaign since 2004.

However, Aston Villa are having an even better campaign. We’re well past the halfway point and Villa still have outside chance of European football despite being in only their second season back in the big time.

When summer rolls around both clubs – who have to be considered as two of the biggest in British football – will be looking to take the next steps in cementing themselves amongst the big boys at the top.

No doubt both will be determined to not only bring in new talent but also keep a hold of the stars who’ve led them to success this season. Rumours are already circling around the futures of Leeds’ Raphinha and Villa talisman Jack Grealish. But should Leeds take the advice of one of their former Premier League stars, the two clubs could become entangled in a transfer saga over Tom Heaton.

Speaking to MOT Leeds News, Paul Robinson urged Leeds to acquire Heaton from Villa. He said the move would be a ‘great signing’ identifying the former Burnley man as ‘one of the best goalkeepers in the Premier League.’

In recent years it’s not been plain sailing for Heaton. The Manchester United academy product cemented himself as a top keeper at Burnley but was subsequently pushed out by the impressive performances of Nick Pope. He then took on the number 1 slot at Villa but injuries have derailed his time at Villa Park and seen him replaced by FA Cup winner Emiliano Martinez. He hasn’t made a first team appearance all season.

That said, Heaton is a top shot-stopper and has been capped by England. He’s certainly a Premier League quality keeper.

But what would this mean for current Leeds keeper Illan Mesiler? The 20-year-old French keeper has been impressive this season. Despite the well-documented defensive issues Leeds have faced – with the likes of Robin Koch injured and big defeats away at Old Trafford and the Emirates – he’s claimed 7 clean sheets which is more than Liverpool’s Alisson.

So, should Leeds potentially stifle the progress of the young keeper to bring in Heaton who began his career at rivals Manchester United?
