Leeds now leading Manchester United for £17m goalkeeper – Transfer hinges on one key demand

Leeds United are in the market for a new number one goalkeeper as Illan Meslier is almost certain to leave after losing his place in the team towards the end of their promotion run in the Championship at the end of last season.

Karl Darlow did a good job of replacing the Frenchman between the sticks. He provided solidity behind the defence as Leeds won the Championship and earned promotion back to the Premier League. However, the former Newcastle man is not seen as a long-term solution at Elland Road.

Leeds aim to bring in a top goalkeeper to replace Meslier and provide stability between the sticks as the Whites face the tough challenge of surviving their first season back in the top flight of English football.

Sporting director Adam Underwood and his recruitment team have had a shortlist ready, and work is expected to take place soon to try and finalise the arrival of a new number one for Daniel Farke’s squad as soon as possible.

Can you name these 10 former Leeds United strikers?

Leeds United may have an edge over Manchester United in the chase for Senne Lammens

Royal Antwerp sporting director Marc Overmars has confirmed that the club want to sell Senne Lammens this summer as they have already signed his replacement.

Leeds and Manchester United are weighing up making a move for the 23-year-old Belgian goalkeeper in the ongoing transfer window, and the Whites may have an edge.

According to GiveMeSport, Lammens wants guarantees of being the number one at his next club when he leaves Royal Antwerp this summer.

The 23-year-old goalkeeper is open to leaving the Belgian club, and a move to the Premier League would be his preferred option.

However, he wants guarantees that he will be the starting goalkeeper from his suitors before accepting a move.

This gives Leeds an edge over Manchester United as they want Lammens as Meslier’s replacement, while the Red Devils are looking to bring in proper competition for Andre Onana, who could challenge him for the number one spot.

Lammens will be an obvious upgrade to Meslier at Leeds

While still young, Lammens has built a huge reputation in Belgium and is seen as one of the best young goalkeepers in Europe at the moment.

He is a brilliant shot-stopper and dominates the penalty box with his penchant for claiming crosses, which alleviates the pressure from his defenders.

No goalkeeper in the world made more saves or prevented more goals than Senne Lammens last season, and he is now set to take his game to a bigger league this summer.

He will be an obvious upgrade to Meslier, whose shot-stopping ability came under fire last season, and has always been suspect when it comes to claiming crosses.

It was good to hear the Longstaff deal going ahead. We still need several more players including an adept keeper. This lad looks the part – time will tell if we get him and if he lives up to the expectations. Listening to content creators on youtube – they don’t seem to grasp why fans are jittery. The difference with last season, Leeds only needed to make a few additions to get promotion. This season we are not tweaking the squad – we need a comprehensive re-evaluation. This contrasts with most of the other teams in the Premiership as they already have squads that have survived the division so need fewer additions. They are tested, Leeds are yet to be tested. Farke needs time to integrate new players with the team he has, then prepare them, plus himself, for the Premiership – and we have only about 4 weeks left.… Read more »
