Leeds United were left frustrated at Wembley after falling to Chelsea in the FA Cup semi-final, missing out on a place in the final.
Daniel Farke’s side couldn’t seize the moment, as their hopes of reaching a first FA Cup final in 53 years slipped away following a tight defeat at the national stadium.
A first-half goal from Enzo Fernández proved decisive, sending Chelsea through to next month’s final against Manchester City.
But the manner of the second half didn’t sit well with Leeds players or fans, as Chelsea leaned on some gamesmanship to see the result out and get over the line.
Leeds United star hammers Chelsea ‘cheating’ tactics
Pascal Struijk was heard telling referee Jarred Gillett that this is now the fourth time this season an opposition goalkeeper has gone down against Leeds United.
Footage also appeared to show Chelsea manager Call McFarlane instructing one of his players to signal Sanchez to go down, as they were clearly struggling to cope with Leeds’ tactical changes.
Ethan Ampadu picked up on it as well, running over to the Chelsea bench while they used the stoppage to talk things through and figure out how to handle Leeds’ new approach.
Leeds were starting to build real momentum and carve out a few chances before Sánchez went down, disrupting the flow and giving the Blues a chance to regroup and take on fresh instructions.
Struijk has every right to be frustrated, but he’ll also have to acknowledge his own mistake in giving the ball away before Fernández’s goal in the first half.
