Despite selling Georginio Rutter, Archie Gray, and Crysencio Summerville this summer, Leeds United invested heavily in its squad as it looks to avoid a third straight season in the Championship.
TEAMTalk compiled a list of the priciest signings from Championship clubs, and Joe Rodon (£10 million), Largie Ramazani (£9.9 million), and Jayden Bogle (£5 million) all made it into the top 10.
However, one former player expects the West Yorkshire club to make that marquee signing during the January transfer window which can put them over the top and have them finish in the top two spots to earn promotion to the Premier League.
Leeds to spend big in January?
Former Scotland international Frank McAvennie believes Leeds have a solid starting eleven but lack the depth to compete for the Championship title. As a result, McAvennie expects The Whites to be active in a few months, whether it’s making one major signing or perhaps two or three that deepens the squad for the final push.
“They’ve got a good 11, 12, 13 players,” McAvennie told Football Insider. “When you go outside that if people get injured, at the moment, everyone is happy everyone is playing and they all want to get back to the Premier League.
“That’s great if they can keep these players fit, if you can stop them from getting injured. The manager is a clever guy, he’ll have everyone working and the boys that come in will just have to do a job until January. I guarantee they’ll buy someone in January.
“But yeah, I’ve got a soft spot for them so I want them to go up, but that won’t happen without getting beat that’s for certain. They’re doing alright at the moment, they’ll be taking it cautiously, one game at a time, the usual football nonsense.”
Leeds are unbeaten in their first four Championship matches, with two wins and two draws, and they’re currently sitting in fourth place with eight points. Daniel Farke and his team trail first-place Sunderland by four points, and any move or moves in January could tilt the balance of finishing in the top two in their favor.
