Sunderland are atop the Championship table, and Leeds United’s promotional rival could be bolstering its midfield to ensure it secures one of the two automatic promotion spots to the Premier League next season.

According to The Sun, Premier League and Championship clubs are monitoring a potential move for 34-year-old Jordan Henderson. The Ajax captain has struggled to secure a regular starting spot with the Dutch side.

Although there may be tax implications following his departure from Steven Gerrard’s Al-Ettifaq, Henderson is confident that won’t be an issue. With January approaching, a return to English football could be on the cards.

The report suggests a possible move back to his boyhood club, Sunderland. Additionally, a new update indicates that the Black Cats are looking to bring in the former Liverpool standout to strengthen their promotion push.

Jordan Henderson to Sunderland?

Football Insider reported on Saturday, citing sources, that Sunderland are working on a stunning deal to re-sign Henderson in the January transfer window. The Black Cats have reached out about a potential move for the veteran midfielder as they prepare for a push for promotion in the new year.

The Championship leaders, currently sitting at the top after nine games, believe the experienced player can help guide them back to the Premier League. Football Insider adds that Ajax will not block Henderson’s departure if he decides to leave the club.

Sunderland are considering offering the England international a short-term contract through the end of the season, with an option to extend it by another year.

Leeds are also looking to bolster their depth in the backline once the January transfer window. The Mirror reported this past weekend that Leeds, Everton, and Fulham are among several English clubs monitoring Steaua Bucharest center-back Joyskim Dawa.

The 28-year-old, who is gaining recognition as a late bloomer, has impressed in the Europa League this season, helping Steaua win both of their opening matches.

Scouts from clubs across England and Europe were reportedly in attendance to see Dawa’s man-of-the-match display in Steaua’s 1-0 win over PAOK before the international break.

The report also notes Leicester City and Burnley have expressed interest in the player. It will be interesting to see if either of these clubs bolster their squad for the second half.
