Leeds ready to pounce as Chris Wilder faces Sheffield United transfer blow

Leeds United are preparing to strengthen their squad in the January transfer window as they look to improve their chances of securing Premier League survival in the 2025/26 campaign.

Daniel Farke finds himself in a far more confident position following a run of positive results. Those performances have steadied the side and given the Leeds head coach greater leverage as he pushes the club to back him in the market.

A recent shift to a 5-3-2 system has highlighted the need for additional firepower. Leeds are keen to add another striker, particularly with Lukas Nmecha currently battling fitness issues that limit his availability.

Beyond the forward line, the club are also targeting creativity, with a winger or attacking midfielder on the agenda. They could have an opportunity to raid their Yorkshire rivals for a player they have coveted for a while.

Chris Wilder faces losing Sheffield United star Gustavo Hamer amid Leeds United links

Hamer has been linked with a move away from Sheffield United since they were relegated from the Premier League. However, the Blades have managed to hold on to him thus far.

However, Wilder recently admitted that he is not sure whether he will be able to hold on to the Dutch midfielder in the January transfer window.

Sheffield United are expecting interest in the player in January. However, they do not want to lose him in the middle of the season.

According to Football Insider, Hamer is ready to move on from Bramall Lane at the end of the season, when he will have a year left on his contract.

With Sheffield United languishing in the bottom half of the Championship table, the midfielder is prepared to seek a transfer, if not in January then next summer.

He wants to play in the Premier League again, and a few Premier League clubs, such as Leeds, are interested in securing a deal for him in the coming windows.

Time for Leeds to take advantage

Farke has been interested in securing Hamer since he became Leeds manager in 2023. However, Sheffield United have resisted selling him.

Wilder was annoyed when Leeds signed Jayden Bogle from Sheffield United in 2024, and he was never going to sell the Dutch midfielder to the Whites.

However, Wilder and Sheffield United appear to be in a far more vulnerable position and do not currently look like a side capable of mounting a serious promotion challenge this season.

Hamer wants to play in the Premier League, and Leeds are in search of an attacking midfielder in the winter transfer window.

He registered 11 goal contributions in the Premier League for a struggling Sheffield United side that ultimately suffered relegation, a return that has still made him an appealing option for several top-flight clubs.

Matches Played 36
Goals Scored 4
Assists 7

Leeds must make a play for him in the Janaury transfer window as Wilder has already signalled that the midfielder could move on in the winter window.

He could easily slot into the attacking midfield role in Farke’s 5-3-2 formation and provide an extra goal threat just behind the forwardline.
